It runs that carb as a single choke and a twin 35mm carb for performance.

Greetings

I have spoken with these guys and they quoted £141 inc VAT to recondition the 34TBIA unit, including an engine test.

DR G, are you a pub quiz guru? Let us know when you are on MasterMind, it should be interesting to see if they can think up any difficult questions for you that you don't know the answer to. Were you a librarian in a previous life, what don't you know man? :?

It seems to be generally recognised that the standard carb arrangement (34 TBIA and 35 CIEE) on GTAs is bizarre, and that the alternatives (e.g. 3 x twin choke Webbers) are an expensive solution. I note that some of the US V8, so-called muscle cars, manage to run on one large carb. Is there some technical reason why it can't be done on a GTA? Surely this would be a cheaper and more simple solution! (Standing by for a lecture!)

I would imagine its down to the manifold. The V8s generally run an Offenhauser set up that has been around since time immemorial and fits most types of US V8s, and even then they cost a few hundred quid. I would imagine if you wanted could get a manifold cast, but as it would be a one off it would probably cost you your arms and legs!!!!!!....I'm sure David G. will give you a more thorough answer!

Theres no reason why you couldnt use a Holley carb as used on Rover and Yank V8s, by having an adaptor plate mounted to the inlet manifold to convert to Holley fixings. They use a longer rectangular port to breathe through. For instance, for around £180 you can pick up a 390cfm unit with a 65mm primary and 65mm secondary, which is around twice the flow of the standard solex setup. Should be a good upgrade and easy to do, but dont expect much economy.

I researched doing the very same to my GTA, found a guy that was willing to do the work for a fair price until i was driven into. Not a worry however, as soon as i get that lovely cheque from the kind insurance man, a new turbo car will be arriving!

Before I even think of modifying it, i'll be getting it on to a rolling road...My other car is a Saab 9000 aero so I'm used to this, turbo's need regular check-ups to ensure the chip/air flow etc is all working correctly and giving the correct torque/power output. I gained 12 bhp (on top of the chip upgrade) from a microscopic hole in one of the breather pipes so worth doing!

carbs

Postby David Gentleman » Thu Aug 19, 2004 10:33 am

The only reason why the triple carb conversion is the best is because you have a seperate 48mm carb for each cylinder, and the inlet manifold is designed ported directly with hardly any restriction. The standard GTA inletmanifold has unequal length porting from the carb body to each cylinder inlet port so its not really that good. The inlet manifold on a V6 turbo has equal length porting but the main inlet is only about 65mm big.

The early KJet inlet manifolds could be adapted. They are a long square rectangular tube, with the three large ports to each cylinder either side. You could weld up both ends of the tube and have the top face machined to fit downdraft Webers, though they would sit higher than the engine cover.

Ive heard rumours a long time ago, and its still mentioned today that some R30 V6 models were fitted with Weber 38/38 DGAS carbs..Id like to know what inlet manifold was used on them?

The R1275 model was fitted with a single Weber 38DGAR carb. It's a twin barrel downdraught with bi-metal spring semi-auto choke. Manifold looks very similar to the Solex version but with only one large carb mounting. Much simpler than solex arrangement.

You can have a look at the pictures next time you visit 8)

Some were also fitted with mechanical injection. Looks almost identical to R25 system.

Seems the atmo GTA was a step backwards!

Aah memories!

About 18 years ago I bought a 38 DGAS Weber as a mild carb upgrade on my 3.0 Capri. Good combination of power and economy but don't think it was much good if you wanted over 180bhp if my memory serves me rightly.
