Sills dilemma

Postby nationofzeros » Sun Nov 04, 2018 6:34 pm

Hi fellers

I am on the horns of a GTA dilemma...just doing a few winter jobs including touching up & repainting my sill rails.

These are currently a smart matt black, but brochures etc. show these as body colour. I think they make the car look a bit corpulent if done this way however...but this is how OEM Renault wanted it.

Has anyone else faced this Hobsons choice recently ? Should I go for originality and make Stratos Blue the new black, in which case I face the 'do my sills look big in this' aesthetic, or stick to figure - hugging matt black ? Choices, choices...

My white car has white sills that have been overpainted satin black and I think they look better like that. Personal preference really.

My black car has black sills too (but they are stick on Le Mans).
My blue one is body colour.
Like you, I prefer black.

It’s actually only the lower part of the sill that is black on mine. You can see they were originally body colour where the paint is flaking.

Just for the record ....... as some of you know, I bought my Alp new, and part of the deal was that I could pick the car up from C.A.T. in Southampton .... Renault's import depot, with cars coming directly from the factory in Dieppe. The pick up date was the second week in December 1989 ..... the car being 1990 Model Year. (all travelling costs were at their expense :up )
From the two pics below, you will notice that in both cases, the lower part of sills are Black ....... if you click on the pics, they will be magnified.
There is another advantage of having them Black ....... if they get chipped, you can touch them up with a black enamel paint with a brush ....... No having to get them sprayed and colour matched. :up
Also you will notice that one of the Alps is Yellow, so clearly that colour was available for a few Alps directly from the factory. The colour was not offered to me, but I was told that they were doing some in Yellow to test the market.
It might be interesting if someone with a Yellow GTA would check the colour code under the bonnet ....... that would most probably show if the colour has been changed since new or not.

That's a super piece of historic evidence, thanks - the ultimate 'smoking gun' !

I checked out my factory brochure and they look pretty black on the photos there as well. So black is the new black.

Thanks all

Chris
