1st Sprint

Today was my first sprint, (ever!) at North Weald in Essex. Conditions dry and sunny spells but a biting cold wind that just blows through your nomex race suit as if it wasnt there.
First up was my first meeting with the scrutineers, something I had been worrying about, but, as it would happen, it coincided with the obligitory drivers briefing so I left Ricky, my 12 year old son, in charge of the car while I attended the briefing, on returning, somewhat anxious, I found the car had passed and the only advice given was for a label to show where the door opening levers were as it is not obvious from the outside.
Got 3 practice runs in the morning and 3 timed runs after lunch, could have had at least another run but had to call it a day, mothers day after all.
Must admit that the track was poorly laid out, the wind put paid to a lot of the cones and lack of time precluded a full walk around beforehand. On my first run I was just face with a massive wide expanse of concrete and no idea where I should be aiming for. A convoy run before the event started would have been appreciated as it wasnt just us first timers having problems.
The hairpin bends, 4 of them, were just a single cone marker bollard with an arrow pointing to the correct side, there is no official line and and tons of space to get it wrong. more like an auto test then a sprint course and very different to anything I have done before. It was impossible to work out where the finish was after the final turn and,on my first run,I had assumed I had finished when passing a marshalls post and lifted off, poodling across the line and losing at least 5 secs in the process. (even after my last run of the day I was still unsure of the route to the finish.) next run was far better but selected 4th instead of second at one point. 3rd run would be my best of the day and 15 secs or so better than my first attempt.
After lunch things went astray somewhat and what I thought was a tidy lap turned out a second down on my best morning time. Next run I half spun and my final disaster after playing with tyre pressures- which transformed the car throught the first chicane- caught me out at the first hairpin when the increased entry speed meant I had no chance of slowing and did a full 360+ and killed the engine which took a lifetime to re- start. (why is that, after a spin engines are so difficult to re start despite always starting first time normally?)

All in all I think I enjoyed the day....car attracted a lot of attention and although being well off the pace I think I learned a lot. It was after all the first time I had driven it in anger.
I have the first championship round on the 16th also at North Weald and will be glad of this shakedown event, at least i should now know which direction to go.

OK, Monday 24th March is my first competative event for 2008.
It is a sprint at the MOD Longcross venue, near Chertsey, W London.

The circuit looks a bit good in Google Earth too !!!
and even better from behind a steering wheel :D :D :D
Officially a non spectator event, but any one coming to watch just needs to say at the gate that you are helping car number 36.
My class has 3 Imprezas, 2 EVOs, a cossie, 2 supercharged cooper Ss, a porky 996 and Tim Jeffrey in his A610. If I can beat the minis I'll be pleased,the rest will be a nice bonus.
Other cars of note, 2 A110s, an R5Gtt, R8Gordini, plenty of side action escorts and a WRX, E type Jag and a 4 litre chevette.
Hopefully I wont be last overall, there are a load of MGs as well as a Fiat Seicento and a Rover 420.
As for the championship, unless I can get a first in class, Mr Garner will be leading me overall.

Best of luck Simon. Weather wise I am glad i gave this one a miss now but as ever, rain is a great leveller. (exluding of course the Japanese high tech motors that is).

If its the same plonker in the Rover 420 then he mangaged to spin infront of me on a roundabout on the way to North Weald last week!

Mark, Weather wise you made a good choice.
Longcross was cold, then wet and cold and then sleet and wet and cold and bloody freezing. Thank goodness for my in car heater.

88 starters, I managed to spin on the convoy run, much to the spectators delight, as I was right infront of them, sorry no photos.
This is one of the fist times the venue has been used in 2 years, so it was VERY slippery. A few cars slid off.

During the day some of us had 1 dry run, I finished 21st and was only beaten by all the 4WD stuff, 3 Westfields, 2 Honda S2000s and Tim in his A610. Tim did very well and was 3rd fastest overall.

And yesterday it was Rushmoor.
Only a small class, thankfully no 4WD cars but there was a Mini Cooper S, supercharged, with LSD and all WOrks kits installed, 225BHP and driven by a long time Mini driver and enthusiast.
Wet to start with, then it dried out.
For the 2 practice runs and the firtst 2 timed runs, the Mini beat me each run, but every time we were both getting faster.
So for the 3rd and final run.... in the glorous sun.... with 0.45 seconds to make up, it had to be a sh!t or bust, pedel to the plastic all out run for me.
I',m sitting on the line, which has just been covered in mud by a Metro 6R4 which had an off and I'm waiting for the green light and the Mini is behind me in the queue and I notice a marshall coming over with a broom...... so I'm thinking that the Mini will have a clean start.
Oh well, Green light comes on, right foot down, left foot up and I take off........ It was a bit of a ragged run, plenty of tyre squelling in and out of every corner with a big moment on the last corner and lots of snaking over the line.

Apart from being emence fun, it was worth it........ 1st in class .....and 14 out of 53 overall.

Due to weather, stayed in bed this morning hence no sprint today, not sure if the event went ahead or not.....
did carry out my first real test at MOD Woodbridge yesterday though...

Another day of mixed fortunes on Sunday.
Good weather for a change, by that I mean the rain and wind was warm this time. Actually a good day weather wise save for a shower at lunchtime which messed up the first 15 or so runners for their timed run. I was no. 12 so had full soaking wet conditions but pulled out a good time, as usual I seem to like the wet.....
Just to confuse me, they have changed the track at North Weald so once again, my previous experience there counted for little, infact it made it me do a wrong route at one point as I was so accustomed to the previous layout. No excuses though as we did have a convoy run this time.
Seems to me the organisers of this one were a little laid back as there was no chocking on the start and many of the "wrong routes" were left unrecorded on the time sheets hence my second run was timed as a slow run rather than the "wrong route" it should have been. Third run was the wet run which I felt happy about but left me under pressure for my final timed run but I managed a nearly 6 second improvement and wound up 38th overall out of 56 odd starters, for my third ever sprint I was quite happy with that but am left wondering where I can find much more speed as my class was won by an old style Fiesta Xr2 complete with drum brakes on the rear. How can he be 5 seconds quicker than me? Still have a lot to learn!

Entry sent off for Prescot, not doing any where near what I planned (due to cost of completing ongoing projects), but I am looking forward to it 8) probably in the 21 as I dont think the Atmo will be ready yet :roll: . Still working on her but I wont have had enough flying hours to drive her to the best of my ability without perhaps having a mishap. :shock:

You sound as if your holding your own Mark, I was really frustrated on my my last outing last year at Lydden, as I had a missfire coming out of the tight bend up the hill losing me at least enough time to be quicker than Simon T :lol: :lol: :lol: (2 seconds) and all it was was not enough fuel in the tank!!! outwitted by myself again :lol:

My only consolation was that I was not slowest in class being a nit quicker than the Cooper S even though I had my missfire :P

Well it will be interesting to see what I can do at the hill this time round especially as I found a boost leak so that 212 BHP recorded should be up by a healthy amount at least 10-15 BHP :wink:

Better start getting ready now s much to do :lol: :lol:

Did any one see,or even record, MOTORS TV this weekend, footage of the British Hillclimb championship, apparantly Gurston was on saturday at 9.00 pm and sunday at 10.45 am?
