Project GTA DD

Postby Tony Smith » Tue Apr 24, 2012 6:14 pm

Project GTA 'Daily Driver' has begun. New engine is just about out of the V6 Espace (what a nightmare!) and after a little fettling it'll be going in my silver '88 Atmo. Needs a door and a nosecone which I have and a repaint in original silver. Sure they'll be plenty of other little bits and pieces to do! Have a set of AZEV's in the garage and some 3 branch manifolds to go on.

Idea is to create an economical GTA for touring. 2.9 injection , about 180bhp and hopefully capable of 35mpg plus. Great for those long foreign trips. Aiming to have it ready for the Nurburgring trip at the end of June so its going to be close.

Hi Tony!

Should be a nice project.

A well driven turbo gives decent MPG, over 30 on the long runs for sure.

A diesel GTA would be a more interesting project now.

Thoughts on a GTAd engine please.......

2.7 or 3.0 Audi TDI V6 engine and gearbox is my thought!!!

BMW 3.0 diesel

Postby Tony Smith » Tue Apr 24, 2012 11:21 pm

Shame the BMW 3.0 litre is not a Vee. Latest incarnation has triple turbos 550 ft/lbs and moves a 2 ton plus 5 series to 60 in under 5 secs while doing 45 mpg! That would make a GTA shift

Picked up my GTA Turbo last week from Yorkshire and a steady drive back at 70mph and a little more at times saw 40plus mpg. This is a pick from earlier in the journey before the economy crept up. HAven't been to fill it up and check the accuracy of this yet but will let you know.

Trevor.

A competition for the least would be more fun! I get 17.6 daily driving to work, who can do better?

As a daily diesel driver for years, the effortless torque and high MPG is very appealing...but diesel is getting expensive. I worked out 20p/litre extra was about the break even point for me over petrol, its 8p just now.

I get 40 mpg out of my A6 Allroad 3.0 quattro at up to motorway speeds with a mix through some town stuff too (its only "thirsty" 230 bhp one).
The 240's will do more like 45-50 on reasonable runs not bad for nigh on two tons with 4wd too. My brother in law get 55 out of his A5 3.0 TDI quattro, but he is a JP.

In a GTA I think the weight of the V6 engine would kill the handling due to weight distribution (I think its a steel block), but the 170BHP (chippable to 200) 4 cylinder CR TDI engines should do 50-55 mpg and IMHO would make a good transplant into an GTA/610. They are quite light and unburstable. If they can do 0-60 in a modem golf in sub 7s, in the lighter GTA they should be really quick.

Don't think power think Torque for road cars.....but don't worry I'm not thinking of doing it to my 610.

I'll go an sit in the corner with Mr Walsh...

Making good progress

Postby Tony Smith » Sat Jun 09, 2012 5:38 pm

Project DD making good progress but some additional problems have been unearthed which have delayed getting it finished in time for the LeMan Classic. Engine has been cleaned, painted, fitted with new rocker box gaskets and oil seal, 3 branch manifolds bolted up. Using the V6 part of the turbo plenum which is a nice touch. New clutch fitted. subframe and wishbone shotblasted and painted and all back in the car. ECU fitted, turbo fuel system fitted, should just be sorting the loom. New discs, pads and my old GAZ suspension from my other GTA all fitted. Unfortunately rad was shagged, fuel lines too - but they had to be changed for new fuel system anyway. Latest casualty is a rear caliper! Exhaust, MOT and wiring to finish - then off to Andy.
Lee is doing a great job - especially as he is doing the work in exchange for an old Laguna estate!
