Renault 8 - Project 300PT

Postby Tony Smith » Sat Jun 09, 2012 6:10 pm

or 300 BHP Per Ton if you didn't get my drift. Got the 8 home today and looking forward to getting stuck into it shortly. I'm about to become Mecaparts best friend I think!

Gave it a quick wash and shes nice and solid, the rusty bits will mainly disappear with fibreglass bolt on panels. Needs a drivers side back door - others will go again, some welding on the passenger side A pillar where the hinges mount.

Gary has all but convinced me to stick with the 1.4 turbo lump but I may see what you can pick up a crashed Megane 225 for. The 1.4 does keep it all looking period and saves a bit of weight. But clutch and gearbox will be marginal so will have to invest some money in that area.

Does anybody know of any big (i.e over 200bhp) 8's knocking about in France, might save me some time and money if someone else has already done something similar.

Cleaned up well

I think it's going to be a great project Tony, good stuff, I'm sure it will be huge fun!

Is that what they technically call a "fresh air engine" :-)

So are you going to have it on some fat rubber?

Rubber

Postby Tony Smith » Sat Jun 09, 2012 8:10 pm

Not sure what to do with the wheels at the minute, want to be a little different from the Gordini clones that are common place in France. 3 stud options aren't exactly thick on the ground :(

It's started!

Postby Tony Smith » Tue Jun 26, 2012 7:19 pm

Well I started pulling the unwanted parts off, and having a good poke around. Going down to see a man who builds space frame chassis' for drag cars at the weekend to have a chat, see what my options are. Need to ditch the original gearbox and tube axle arrangement as its not up to the job. Want to try and fit a UN1 'box, and use a T2 bellhousing to mate to the 1.4 block ala Turbo 2 but the other way round.

Wheels

Postby Tony Smith » Tue Jul 10, 2012 5:43 pm

They were selling these of too cheap for my weak will to resist in LeMan. Going to change to 4 stud hubs and see if I can get these 7 x 15's to fit.

Plans

Postby Tony Smith » Tue Jul 10, 2012 5:52 pm

Plan is developing now, Gta subframe with 1.4 , T2 bell housing, UN1 box, 1/2 cage, Ford hubs, custom wishbones or trailing arms. Hope to get this guy involved, his work is amazing

Fiat 600 rear hubs - all made from billet!

His name is Chris Isaacs, he's down in Kent. Think he has a Morris Minor in super saloon racing this year (American V8 power). Seemed a really nice guy, his work is real quality.

Trevor, Steve took a pic with us holding 2 wheels over one side of a GTA and took a pic - looked really good - but don't think you will get the sizes and offsets required.

Well the 8 has been booked in with Chris Isaccs to have the rear end sorted out in January so when it comes back a couple of weeks later it will hopefully have GTA subframe, Gordini engine, and UN1 box fitted. Likely that Sierra hubs will be used, with custom wishbones to suit So plan now is to get engine built up ready and get the body prepped - i.e derusted, any welding done and the engine bay painted.
