GTA Blue - Heaven

Postby Frans_GTA » Sat May 17, 2014 8:58 pm

Guidance welcomed... Had this small problem before and had it sorted but it returned today for the first time in almost two years of ownership.
Was out driving and after about 20 odd miles, noticed that when changing gear, the revs stayed in / around 2 - 2,500 rpm. A little embarrassing when you've come to a junction and the engine is idling away at 2000 rpm!
Any thoughts.
Car is standard V6 Atmo...

On a turbo would suspect idle control valve.
Not sure about atmo.

I would check all those little rubber tubes, as if you get air leaking into the inlet system, it will hunt and rev... but I own a turbo so as Miles said we are just unsure. but take a very close look at all the rubber as it can crack and leak air into the Vacuum.

Have a look at the throttle linkage and make sure it's not sticking and holding the throttle open.
Had exactly the same symptoms on my Turbo and little lubrication where the link meets the throttle body sorted it.

Dear All
Thanks for guidance - will check the lube element out as well as possible air leaks and let you know...

Hi Frans,
On an Atmo there are a number of fault conditions which can cause high idle revs to varying degrees. But you said that it had happened before ..... can you remember what action you took to sort it out ? .... and do you have a manual ?
But in the first instants, you should check that there is not a foreign body rolling around the pivot shaft of the throttle pedal which might be stopping it return correctly.
Then, as johnc suggests, checking that the carb buterflies and carb linkages are not sticking either by binding or the throttle cable sticking.
If all that is OK, with the revs up ... ie in fault condition, ... remove the air filter cover and check that the auto choke is operating correctly by seeing if the choke buterfly on the single carb is positioned vertically once the engine has reached operating temperature.
It might be worth checking the above first before getting into further detail of other faults that can cause this .... & this is where if you have a manual, it would be easier to explain further tests.
Let us know how you get on.
