It's easier to press the bush into the rod first rather than on the ball.

Thanks to John, Paul & Clee

Yesterday I removed the knuckle lever again, took the bush off & made a simple puller- 2 large washers & a long thin bolt, to pull the bush through the rod. Having replaced the knuckle, the bush popped on second try :super. I took the car out & the gearchange is the best its been since I bought the car :Cheer

Glad you've sorted it. A real nightmare to do.

As an aside, I did replace my gear change knuckle balls at the same time. Not certain if I posted these before or not, but below are some photos of the knuckle before and after replacing the balls.

Makes a huge difference when selecting reverse and also 3rd and 5th.

Fairly easy to do, and in fact a breeze compared to renewing the bush !!!

My GTA has done circ 130k and is 30 yrs young, so you can judge what condition yours may be in if you havent already changed them.
Originals are soft rubber, so I expect them to decline with age rather than miles.
Replacement balls are solid plastic and should be fit and forget.

I was advised to buy genuine Renault as the Simon Auto ones are a bit harder & therefore more difficult to fit. They are still available. I got mine on-line, so should be available to order from a dealer. I would need to look up the name of the company that supplied mine. It is the rear gear linkage bush that tends to fail. I bought 2 as they were only a few pounds each.

The big issue is getting the car high enough to work under. As it is usually impossible to drive the car once the bush has failed, it cannot be driven up ramps, unless of course its stuck in reverse gear. I have 2 small trolley jacks which allowed me to jack both sides of the car up simultaneously, then place my car ramps under the rear wheels. It is also helps if you can get the front wheels off the ground. Even with the car this high, it is still very tight, & access is extremely limited. Obviously if you have access to a vehicle hoist it would make the job much easier.

There is a link to a parts book, available to club members.
