Suspension

Postby paulrob100 » Sun Dec 04, 2016 6:42 pm

I have noticed one of my front shocks has lost all damping. I think it is an original De-Carbon one. I know these are no longer available. I would like to keep the car original if possible. Are there any OEM ones out there, or maybe a pair of good used ones ?

Alternatively, I know that there are Spax & ART kits available. Which one is best ? I am not after the beast lap time, just a good ride / handling balance.

Both are just dampers rather than a developed kit and not suited to std springs .Art supplied dampers are GAZ,readily available but on std oe springs sit too high .Spax are more a coilover design but again you will need to buy springs and mounting plates
I can check if I have any decent original if you want to stay OE.

Thanks Lee

I would be happy to go to a fully developed after market kit. However as the rest of the car is standard / original, it probably makes sense to stay that way. I have always replaced things in axle pairs before, but it is only the o/s front that has gone soft. If you have any, I would be interested.

I have a Spax kit on my turbo and GAZ on my injection GTAs and in my opinion the Spax kit is better, quality and performance wise. Handling is very similar but Spax give a far better ride for the same level of set up.

Thanks Tony, that's interesting. do you still use the oe springs ? Or are the springs part of the `kit` ?

Both kits came with springs, not sure what the poundages are though. Steve Dell might know, he supplied the Spax and he had one of the GAZ kits the same as mine too. Damping just feels better on the Spax kit.

This is a link to the old site data.

www-pre-ms1/suspension.htm

Gaz kit has 40 odd clicks on damper hardness and is more 'universal' as used on GTA and A610 .
You will have to spec the springs to suit. Also there is a rod length option for front.
Std springs will fit but you will have very limited height adjustment with the front platform needing to be fully lowered to get near correct ride height .

Spax dampers are model specific so would like to think they are better developed but they do not supply springs. You will have to spec springs again and they need mounting platforms and topmounts .I designed some tops to suit coilover.
Only fitted the Spax to A610 and they seem good for std road use but spring rates and heights are crucial and tailored to suit .
