Spider MoT Emissions - Call for Help

Postby Grahamcressey » Mon Apr 24, 2017 6:24 am

Hi All,

After it's winter slumber, it's MoT time for my Spider and unfortunately it's failing the emissions reading for CO:

- Fast Idle 0.56% vs 0.20%
- Second fast idle 3.51% vs 0.20%
- Natural idle 1.29% vs 0.30%

It was tested after having been warmed thoroughly, the other HC readings are fine and the lambda sensor was only replaced last year.

Has anyone had experience of this before and how it was resolved? Advice / suggestions would be very welcome.

Cheers

No real help only to sympathise.

Mine is the same - not standard but with aftermarket ECU. No way it would pass the emissions test and no one to really tune it in the UK so need to tweak it myself for the next MOT.

I have a very friendly garage and even they said try and make some improvement for the next test which suggests that the emissions were really bad!

I did note my CAT was absolutely empty - have you checked yours as that will make some difference in reducing the emissions although won't solve my issue.

Regards

If you need any aftermarket ECU tuning then there is only one place to go up North :up

As far as emissions go .I'd do the basics if it was all fine before .Check air filter, plugs etc and give it a good hard run .

engine oil change (if its not been done recently) cataclean in the tank a few days before next test.
never thought I would want a list but now find myself needing one just to remind me: Clio V6 230, 5 gt turbo, 5 Gordini turbo, Megane RS 300 Trophy.

Thanks Davidmt - good shout on the CAT, I'd not checked that. Any idea how I can do that or tips on how you replaced yours?

Mine's completely standard (exhaust/ECU etc). Sounds like I could be missing out if ECU tuning gets you a benefit - hope yours finds it way through the next test okay.

I'll try and encourage the garage to adopt that 'friendly' approach too ;-)

Thanks Clee- good point on all the usual stuff making a difference; I'll get those done at the service and treat it to some more STP as well enjoying a spirited run to the test station :-)

It makes me wonder if anyone's fitted a K&N air filter or anything other than the standard to good effect on a Spider. I'll have a little search around the forum...

Top tip - thank you, I'll get some of that bought and run through it.

Oil's been done just a few 1000 miles ago with some fancy Shell fossils and I'll change again this service.

Fingers crossed for the test!

Chris at EFI-Parts mapped my Adaptronic ECU.
At MOT, I was well within the limits, but my GTA does not need or have a CAT.
1986 : '86 GTA v6 BW-EFR turbo, with Adaptronic ECU
Firsts at
2007 : Gurston Down & RAOC Champion
2008 : Rushmoor & Eelmoor & ACSMC Hillclimb class Champion
2009 : Longcross & Eelmoor
2010 : Crystal Palace & Eelmoor

So I've heard from the garage looking after the Spider today....

Good news: MoT passed (Cataclean, K&N and a bit of magic dust)

Bad news: the 'slight knocking noise' was investigated to reveal that the front anti-roll bar on the Spider is snapped

Does anyone have / know of a replacement I can get hold of please? (Fingers crossed it's not a custom fabricated part!)

Thanks in advance for any ideas
