Helmet expiration warning

Postby eastlmark » Fri Sep 05, 2014 7:47 am

Beware anyone with a BS 6658 type A/FR helmet as these have been marked as "due for withdrawal" since 2011 have now been confirmed for withdrawal at the end of next year (31/12/2015) Expect a few coming up for sale on Ebay soon but beware, the time you can use it will be short.

Furthermore, just to confirm that SA2000 cannot be used from the end of this year (31/12/2014)
and SA2005 will be phased out at the end of 2018.
never thought I would want a list but now find myself needing one just to remind me: Clio V6 230, 5 gt turbo, 5 Gordini turbo, Megane RS 300 Trophy.

Hi Mark,
Out of curiosity, when did my bs 6885-85 type a helmet expire? ...I guess some years ago? Would I be likely to be able to use it.on a track day?
Cheers

No Idea Lee. Not even mentioned so probably way back. Will be fine for a track day I would have thought as these regs only cover MSA and FIA sanctioned events. Suppose it really depends on the track day organiser. Was surprised that Goodwood would not accept motorcycle helmets for track days- not usually the case but I guess renting the proper ones out is a good source of income.

You would have thought bike helmets would be equally as good, or better..! We looked into the reasoning behind it at Goodwood, and that reason was that Motorcycle helmets are not fire proof.. Makes sense when you think about it really. Impact risk is greater on a bike, but fire risk is far less likely. It would more likely be the other way around in a car.

Bike helmets are specific to bouncing off and skidding along tarmac, while car helmets are for bouncing off metal roll bars.

As Shaun says it's mostly down to the fire rating. Bike helmets burn. Car ones don't. And as Simon says impact types are different.

I never really got this discussion even when trying to save money which I like to do!

If you ride a bike get a bike helmet.

If you drive a car get a car helmet.

Sure you can get away with less at some venues (push bike helmets a Croix) but why bother when the proper piece of kit is so cheap these days.

If it's only for occasional use you can save money by just renting the proper one for a tenner at the venue.
